I don’t usually do these kinds of posts but I thought that for once I would make an exception considering I have just watched some of the best car crash TV I have ever seen, live on BBC 2. Twitter has been on fire since then, so for those of you who are wondering what the hell I’m going on about, let me give you a quick rundown with the help of the above video.
It’s late on Sunday night, Béyonce had just finished her headlining set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, and if you were watching the live coverage via the BBC then you were treated to Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe and Radio 6 DJ Lauren Laverne discussing their thoughts in the aftermath. From the off it was clear to see that Zane had some issues that Béyonce was chosen over QOTSA to close proceedings on the Pyramid Stage, as he threw in a number of off the cuff sarcastic comments. This unfortunately prompted Laverne to launch into a nonsensical rant about George Clinton which took up the majority of the remaining time before they had to roll into the next VT. When Zane was given the rare invitation to speak he took the opportunity to laugh in Laverne’s face for trying to stitch him up. Awkward.
However, the best was yet to come. After some more cringe-worthy back and forth between the pair it was suddenly announced that Béyonce might be swinging by the studio for an interview. As the rumour soon transpired to be true, Zane Lowe declared that he had to leave the show because he had to rush home to see his two kids. In reality, he got booted off by some BBC execs who weren’t willing to air the most explosive interview of the year. Jo Wiley was then wheeled in to boost the number of fan girls on stage ready for Queen Bey’s arrival.
I can’t say I like Zane Lowe, but my respect for him has risen slightly after seeing that he had the bollocks to openly hate on Glastonbury’s headliners whilst presenting the BBC’s flagship Glastonbury show.
Negative points go to whoever gave the order for Zane to be taken off the air. Sure he may not have been overjoyed about her performance, but he still has a right to an opinion and the BBC should be the place to air it. Of course there are rumours flying around on Twitter sayng that he got the sack, but I don’t think that’s the case.
