It’s been quite some time since I reviewed an album – I’ve been waiting for a worthwhile album to come along, it’s not because I’ve been inexplicably lazy. So there’s one white lie and here are some more. White Lies’ second album Ritual comes amid high expectations after their debut offering, To Lose My Life… charted at number one two years ago.
My excuse for the lack of reviews is probably as false as you can get. I have been pretty lazy and this album is not particularly worthwhile. I enjoyed the band’s debut album but thought it got more credit than deserved and I think the second album proves this.
What was at first credited as touchingly haunting and full of emotion has become rather monotone. Lead singer Harry McVeigh undoubtedly has one of the coolest voices in the game, but track after track and it starts to get a bit too heavy and bogs you down. Despite all my negativity, there are a lot worse albums out there but Ritual certainly highlights the need for White Lies to refresh and revitalise their sound.
