I have a lot of respect for Taio Cruz, he has to be the most talented male solo artist in the UK at the moment. Who else do you know that has had a #1 album which they produced and wrote themselves? I can’t think of one.
The reason that I like Taio so much is the fact that his debut release “Departure” was absolutely brilliant. However, I’m afraid I don’t feel the same about this album. As mentioned in other reviews the album seems to be split into two distinct parts, as Taio describes it “half the album is uptempo and dancey, whereas the other half is… leaning more towards Coldplay and Take That”. My opinion? Half the album is full of weak dance tracks, whereas the other half is full of even weaker ballads.
I can’t help but feel disappointed by what he has produced on “Rokstarr”, probably because I know he can do much better. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good songs, but there just aren’t enough for a man of his calibre. He even included “I’ll Never Love Again” which was on his first album “Departure”. Why?
Taio should stay focused on his music rather than trying to flog his new range of sunglasses. Some of his songs are starting to sound very generic (similar basslines & synths), he definitely needs to come back with a bang on album number 3.
