I’ve now identified that there’s a definite routine that I go through when listening to a new Jimmy Eat World album; I play it, tell everybody how underwhelmed I was with it, and then finally realise months later how fucking amazing it is.
Their newest studio album Invented was exactly the same, except this time I have tried to speed up the cycle so I can embrace it from the get-go.
They don’t half make it hard though. It seems with each passing album it is increasingly difficult to find those songs that just reach out and grab you, gone are the days of those instantly infectious tracks like The Middle or Lucky Denver Mint. On Invention I found it came as a surprise considering that they re-enlisted the services of Mark Trombino (who worked on Clarity and Bleed American) to take the helm for production duties.
In summary, I can only liken Invented to my very first experiences with coffee; Initially I didn’t really enjoy it and couldn’t see what all the fuss was about, but after giving it a few more tries I started to wonder how I’d possibly lived without it.
Stand-out Track: Mixtape – In true Jimmy Eat World fashion, the closing number on this album is all about them saving the best ’till last.
