Clare Maguire has often been touted as an artist to watch out for, but until now we have only been treated to rough demos of her sound. She dropped out of school at the age of 16 to pursue a career in music using the familiar talent springboard, Myspace.
Electro producer Primary 1 was eager to utilise her talents after listening to her music, and whisked her away to record some demo tracks. Since then she has had Jarvis Cocker, Plan B, and Mike Skinner write songs for her, Universal Music offer a multi-million pound contract, and been plied with shots by Jay-Z at his restaurant in New York.
After she signed with Universal, her Myspace page was wiped of all traces of her music and she was whisked away to begin writing and recording with some of the biggest names in music, including Fraser T. Smith who has helped develop and hone her current sound (I swear Fraser Smith has his fingers in so many pies that he must be a robot, or a longtime sufferer of severe insomnia).
Now it seems that the PR machine has started to go into overdrive, so I guess the world is finally ready to hear some of Clare’s finished work. The first release is been a fully mastered version of one of her initial demo tracks, Strangest Thing.
She has such a unique and powerfulvoice, that it’s hard to imagine that she won’t be immensely successful in the next few years, and it’s easy to see why industry tongues were wagging so wildly when they first heard her Myspace material.
Neon Hitch is an English singer who describes herself as “If Kate Bush went on a safari in the jungle and took acid with a synthesizer”. You thought that was crazy? Check these ‘facts’ out:
1. Hitch was raised in a gypsy family of circus performers.
2. Before leaving, aged 15, she traveled Europe performing as a fire dancer & trapeze artist.
3. Hitch was previously the flatmate of Amy Winehouse.
Well I guess that explains a few things about her initial self-description.
Anyway, I just stumbled across her mashup cover of Mike Posner’s lyrics from Cooler Than Me and Sia’s instrumental from Breathe Me, and it’s pretty fucking cool.
Neon Hitch was signed to Warner Music Group (spit) by American Idol’s Kara DioGuardi (who also discovered Jason DeRulo) and is currently working with American producer Benny Blanco (Ke$ha, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Santigold, Spank Rock, etc) on her debut album Beg, Borrow and Steal.
She’s another act I think we will be seeing a lot more of in the future.
I can’t classify British synth band Fenech-Soler as new music since this track was released in 2009, but seeing as I only just discovered them yesterday, technically they are new to me (also they had a single out in April).
Fenech-Soler have now signed to a ‘major’ label, so you can expect to be seeing a lot more of them in the future, especially since they have been doing a lot of remix work too (Marina & The Diamonds, One Night Only, Mimó, etc…).
If you fancy checking them out in the flesh then you may be in luck, according to their Myspace they are on a heavy touring schedule this year, right the way up till November.
