Antwan ‘Big Boi’ Patton has spent a long, long time on this album and luckily for him it appears to have been worth it. Recording began in 2004, its release was announced in 2007, and some label infighting was followed be a series of track leeks – some by the artist himself, but finally the funkily named Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty is on offer.
It is an album which attacks you from all angles. There is an engaging mix of energy and laidback smoothness running throughout the album via the odd dabble into a powerful intensity in General Patton and Tangerine. Shutterbug has only just broken into the charts but epitomises the forceful yet flowing style of Patton and his collaborators.
The diverse album mirrors the creative nature of Big Boi and whilst no artist should be constrained, this album could have benefited from a little more structure. The beats and hooks are amazing, and Big Boi’s vocals have always had an easy-listening vibe but the lyrical content certainly reduces the impact of a number of tracks. In some ways though, this just encapsulates Big Boi’s fun-loving musical nature, a quality you wouldn’t want him to lose.
Hustle Blood is certainly an exception, using the multi-talented Jamie Foxx to fine effect over touching music which somehow maintains a heavy beat. Foxx isn’t the only big name on board. B.o.B, Janelle Monáe and T.I. all help Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty to be a broad, smooth, effortlessly good album although Big Boi’s foray into the solo world may have just convinced him to go back to his Outkast roots, with almost every track on this album relying on another artist to pack the musical punch of the track.
